Ran is a registered patent agent with a Ph.D. in physical chemistry. She is a former PCT patent examiner and served as the International Searching Authority on behalf of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. In this role, Dr. Pang drafted written opinions and international Search Reports regarding the patentability of PCT applications.

Dr. Pang worked as a patent analyst in an IP firm. She has patent experience in various fields, including semiconductors, electronics, optics, circuits, electrochemistry, communications, medical devices, and computer hardware and software etc. Dr. Pang is also a search professional and brings her examining experience to bear in conducting freedom-to-operate, invalidity, and patentability analyses.

Dr. Pang has a broad technical knowledge base. Before her career in patent law, she spent ten years as an academic scholar doing research on semiconductor materials, electrochemistry, and optical systems. She has authored 47 peer-reviewed scientific papers as well as a book chapter.  She earned her Ph.D. degree from Xiamen University, where she conducted research on electrochemical materials and developed spectroscopic instruments. During her Ph.D. program, she worked with Rudolph A. Marcus, 1992 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, at California Institute of Technology as a visiting scholar.  While at Caltech, Dr. Pang conducted research on high-efficiency photovoltaic material for solar cells.
